Thank you for visiting chickentractor.com. We aim to be a resource for raising chickens and building the unique style of chicken coops known as the chicken tractor. For those that might be wondering, a chicken tractor is a chicken coop on wheels. The advantages to a chicken tractor are that it allows the owner to easily move the chicken coop to giving new pecking ground to the chickens. Chicken tractors also make yard maintenance a little bit easier. The clear disadvantage is the increased cost of this particular genre of chicken coop. The increased cost is due to the wheels. Wheels are and added cost! The other challenge with a chicken tractor is security. A chicken tractor must be slightly elevated from the ground. After all, it has wheels! So, on the one hand, it needs clearance to be moveable. On the other hand, there is clearance and predators can more easily dig under the chicken coop. Normally, with chicken tractors, we recommend having them in a relatively secure location such as a fenced in back yard. But, before we get ahead of ourselves and delve into chicken tractors on a much deeper level, we just wanted to welcome you to our website and thank you for taking the time to visit Chicken Tractor. DIY Chicken Tractors is already up and running. They currently have one design and are selling chicken tractor plans for that design. We are impressed with the creativity in this design. It definitely requires a set of plans to build or, let us just say, the plans are worth purchasing to save you time. It is more intricate than slapping together some basic wood shapes. Just take a look at the design and you will understand. Despite the unique nature of this design, it has all of the essentials we think are important for any kind of chicken coop. They have a nesting area and show how to build in nesting boxes as part of the instructions. They have a hen house with a roost. Even though the roost is not very high off the ground, your chickens will appreciate a roost. This chicken coop has multiple access points and we think it will hold about six chickens. As far as cost to build, it is mainly constructed out of plywood, 2x2’s, 1x2’s and the spine is made of 2x4’s. Considering all of the supplies (screws, hinges, hardware, wheels, paint and wood), this chicken coop likely costs approximately $300 to construct. To be honest, the twelve wheels are a large part of that cost (about 40%). But, as we discussed in the introduction, chicken tractors are more expensive because of the wheels. However, if you want to move your chicken coop around the yard, a chicken tractor is the way to go. You have to consider your back in all of this! Besides, this chicken coop is twelve feet long. It would be a monster to move without wheels. Take a look at this design. It is definitely a modern day chicken coop!

DIY Chicken Coops is a “one stop shop” for all of your chicken coop needs. As it turns out, they are developing their website into a one stop shop for all of your chicken needs as well. They have a robust informational section on raising chickens, types of chickens, and basic economics of raising chickens. They walk people through some basic questions. For those thinking about raising chickens for the first time, they have a section called “Why raise chickens?” As it turns out, they review other resources as well. They have a section called chicken coop plans. They review DIY Chicken Tractors and other styles of chicken coops as well. We suspect they will offer more and more products as time goes by. Their initial banner (posted in this article) of being a “one stop shop” gives some indication of what the website will be over time. In that regard, they will complement this website well as we want to find ways to improve the chicken tractor market. We will try to gain access to some regular chicken coops to see if we can modify them into chicken tractors. In the mean time, DIY Chicken Coops is a resource worth perusing.
